Lionsgate е основана през 1995 от Франк Джустра, Ванкуварския инвестиционен банкер се надява със своя капитал да увеличи нарастващата филмова индустрия в своя град. Lionsgate Entertainment Corporation e Канадска компания за забавление съществуваща в различни въплъщения. Сегашната компания е създадена във Ванкувър, Британска Колумбия, но е със седалище в Санта Моника, Калифорния. От 2007г. тя е с най-комерсиален успех за независима филмова и телевизионна компания разпространена в Северна Америка. Първия голям успех в бокс-офиса е Американски психар през 2002г. с което започва тенденция за производство и разпространение на филми, твърде дискутирани за голямо Американско студио.
